Your market
(general information)

We have a wonderful market that will reopen on May 15. But you needn't take our word for it; see the delightful article about the Market published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on July 27, 2007. We couldn't have said it better.

(Thanks to the Observer-Reporter for the nice photo below.)

market overviewWhat is sold?

The Market offers the finest and freshest locally grown produce (both organic and local farm-grown); choice meats, eggs, and dairy products; and excellent prepared foods - fresh-baked bread, pastas, salsas, and more. Once the Market opens, the link below will help you keep track of what is being offered for sale.

What is selling now.

Who are the vendors?

Our vendors are a wonderful group of hard-working, local farmers, cooks, and small business persons. You can chat with the people who have grown or made what you buy. We also encourage you to contact our vendors directly, especially if you would like to arrange a special order or purchase in quantity. The link below will take you to our vendors page for 2008.

More details.

Who is performing?

Our Market offers entertainment as well as food. We have live musicians nearly every week. And they are very, very good.

Meet them.

When is the Market?

The Market is held every Thursday afternoon from 3:00 to 6:00 pm, from mid-May to the end of October. And we are open rain or shine. You'd be surprised at how much business we do on rainy days!

Receive a lovely reminder by email, once a week, during the market season.

The Market is held in a municipal parking lot at 139 S. Main Street. This is directly across the street from the Observer-Reporter's offices, immediately in front of the Ivy Green floral shop, and directly under our huge pepper mural (see the logo at the top of the page).

(The blue tags on this map are nearby parking lots.)

Where can we park?

The City has kindly agreed not to enforce its meters during the Market's hours in all metered municipal lots and on all downtown streets. Here are five nearby lots.

(When the following maps open, switch to "satellite" or "hybrid" view to see the lots more clearly.)

The adjacent lot (right on the north edge of the Market). In order to preserve use of this lot by Market shoppers, we are now reserving some spaces for those who have purchased permits for this lot and find that they need to get back in during Market hours. Please don't park in these marked spaces unless you have a Lot E permit. Thanks!

The lot behind Citizens' Library (opens on E. Wheeling Street).

The lot near City Hall and the Police Headquarters (opens on W. Maiden Street)

The lot on the east side of S. Main just south of Maiden (opens on S. Main Street)

The lot behind the renovated train station (at the bottom of S. Main Street behind the County Tourism office).

We also maintain two handicapped parking spaces immediately in front of the Market on S. Main Street. These are located adjacent to the driveway ramp into our lot, so wheelchair access is straightforward. If you need help, call 412-296-0518 and one of our volunteers will meet you.

Are there gift certificates?

A Market DollarYes, we have lovely gift certificates. They look like colorful money and we call them "Market Dollars." Each is worth $10 and you can buy as many as you wish. Recipients can spend them like cash at the Market and will receive their change in cash. And they don't expire or lose value! Just ask a volunteer if you'd like to buy a few. You may use these to introduce your friends to the Market. Or you can use them as a nice present for those savvy friends who already enjoy shopping here.

Are WIC and FMNP coupons accepted?

Many of our vendors welcome WIC and FMNP payment vouchers. These vendors generally display a sign indicating their participation. WIC is a program offering nutritional screening and food supplements to pregnant women and children under five. It issues coupons good for particular foods, a few of which can be found at the Market. You can learn more about the program and the foods it covers here: http://www.pawic.com/. FMNP is a broader program offering coupons to low-income seniors to buy fresh, unprepared fruits, vegetables, and herbs at local farmers' markets. Questions about that program can be answered here: http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/SFMNP-Fact-Sheet.pdf.

What is the Community Table?

The Main Street Farmers’ Market offers Washington area non-profit organizations the opportunity to promote themselves and their activities at the Market. If you wish to participate, please follow this link for details.

How can I help?

The market is run by a plucky band of volunteers. And we'd be delighted if you could join us. There are many things you could do, from helping with our website to working the market itself. If you think you could help, follow the "Contact Us" link below or come to the Market and speak to one of us there. We'd be very grateful.

The Market's very existence depends upon its volunteers. And we'd like to thank those, both past and present, who have made the Market possible, including Suzanne Ewing, Jeanne and Mark Berkley, Steve Dettinger, Al and Kim Lucchini, Cathy and Julie Pedtke, Harry Funk, Scott Bromley, Tripp Kline, Angel Shaw, Marcie Callan, and Eric Crunick.

To the top.
