Welcome!

Our Market offers delicious, locally grown or produced foods, friendly vendors, and talented musicians.  Please stop by.

What's Fresh
bread

The Market will feature early summer crops such as early season tomatoes, cucumbers, kohlrabi, and even the first corn, cherries, and peaches.  Strawberries are disappearing fast, so get them now.  And don't forget the year-round staples like eggs, fresh bread, jams, pierogies, cookies, fudge and our many other full season products.

For a detailed list of what we expect to be selling this Thursday, click on the What's Fresh link below.

This Week's Music
Adam Sutch
Adam SutchAdam Sutch is dazzling on the hammered dulcimer (as his many awards will attest). And there are few instruments better suited to open-air markets than a hammered dulcimer. Bright, percussive, often danceable, sometimes delicate, the hammered dulcimer under Adam's hands is a joyful experience.  We were lucky to have him appear last year and are thrilled to have him back.

For more information about all our musicians, click on the "Our Musicians" link below.

Potter Judy Hopson

Judy will be back again this week with her wheel.  And she will again be offering kids a chance to throw their own pot (which she will then glaze and fire).  Kids love this!  Who wouldn't?

The Humble Kohlrabi
What is that?

Yes, it does look like a squashed tennis ball with long leathery leaves.  And yes, they are sometimes purple.  I associate them with my still very German great-grandmother, Frau Dettinger.  (Their silly name means "cabbage turnip" in German.)  And while my great-grandmother was a scary woman, the kohlrabi isn't really a scary veg.  It is merely a close relative of the cabbage with a very short and very fat stem.  The small young specimens that are now available in the Market have a sweet cabbage and turnip-like taste when peeled and eaten raw (which is how I like them). They make a crunchy snack with a nice sweetness. They also make great slaw and crunchy additions to salads.  But you can also cook them like boiled potatoes (boil them until tender, peel them, and serve with butter and salt).  But whatever you do, don't be afraid of them.  Save that for your scary great-grandmother.

Where and When

The Market is held every Thursday, 3-6 pm, rain or shine, from mid-May through the end of October.

We are located in the municipal parking lot at 139 S. Main Street, downtown Washington (directly across from the Observer-Reporter's offices).

For a zoomable map of the market and suggested parking places, click on the map link below. After you have looked at the street view, check out the "satellite" view!

At the Community Table
Seals Adult Day Service

Our Adult Day Service is a warm, inviting place for adults
who can't stay home alone when other family members must leave for work, run errands or just need a break. (It is not a nursing home or in-home care.) People who attend live elsewhere, either at their own homes or in the homes of other family caregivers.

Our Program is open from 6:30 AM till 5:30 PM to meet the
needs of working caregivers. Easter Seals meets your loved one's physical, social, and emotional needs in a safe, homelike setting. We provide social activities, skilled nursing services, physical and mentally challenging activities, and a lot of TLC. Please call us for more information at 724-942-4511. We would love to hear from you.

Please join our NEW email list!
(the old one is going away)

We want our email list to be as fresh as possible. So we have started a new mailing list and will eventually retire the old list. But we don't want you to miss out!

If you signed up this year, you are already on the new list. But if you received our email last year, please sign up anew.

There are three ways to ensure your name is on the new list.
  • Drop a new sign-up slip in our box at the Market.
  • Send us an email asking to be put on the new list.
(You can click here and put something like "sign me up" in the subject line. No other text is necessary.)
  • Use the sign up button below. If you are on the old list, you will be taken to a website that will tell you that you are already a member and ask you if you want to update your profile. Push the "Submit" button and you will be sent an email with a link that allows you to change your profile. Follow that link and check the box for "newsletter recipient - our new list."
